Am I satisfied with my role in my own narrative? I felt that the honest answer to that question was a resounding "no". I decided it was time to make a change in my career and my life and I began working on a consulting business. After about a week of brainstorming with friends, I settled on the name Narrative. At the time I had no idea that it would be such a buzz word in the election and suddenly I would hear or read the word "narrative" at least 10 times a day. I heard so many pundits tell both candidates that it was time to "take control of the narrative" or "reclaim the narrative". Hearing it so much reminded me that many of us think of narrative as something associated with great fiction. My attraction to the word was related to a quote I came across years ago that has always stuck with me:
"People think stories are shaped by people, in fact it's the other way around."
Like so many creatives, my background is extremely varied: theater director, corporate trainer, vocalist, creative director, event planner and the list goes on. My narrative has been shaped by each of these creative endeavors and the stories associated with them. When I finally decided to step out on my own, it became clear that the common thread in all of my successes was the willingness to collaborate and to define and refine a story. Now that I have the freedom to spend my life creating, I feel its important to share some of the fun and exciting projects that I am able to work on. This isn't just about the world of Narrative, but the fascinating and creative people I get to interact with everyday. This blog could give you a glimpse into the creation of a training and development program, a recipe for the perfect bolognese, photos from a great vacation, or an insider's look at the creative direction of corporate event entertainment. I've realized that it's all of these things that have shaped my career as a creative entrepreneur and continue to refine the narrative of my life.
